May 16th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Today both Roberto Rossellini's Neorealist classic VOYAGE TO ITALY and Terrence Malick's New Hollywood masterpiece BADLANDS screen their last at the Film Forum. Hey, the journey's gotta end somewheres sez this guy, and both couples find the elusive spark their lives have been sorely bereft of. Sorta. If you've never attended a screening of these gems, or haven't seen them at all, I'd IMPLORE you to attend a back-to-backer at the West Houston Cinemecca! However, I've already chosen both offerings as my Pick sometime tihs month, so blame your own lazy butt if you've missed these screenings but they are disqualified as Today's Pick. Like that ever stopped anyone...

Claude Chabrol's THE COUSINS reps the French director's first toe dipped in his country's Nouvelle Vague. Screens for the second of its three-day run as part of MOMA's ongoing Auteurist History of Film series. I must pass in favor of a basement auteur slightly less influential than CC to the world stage of art-house filmmaking, whose efforts proved indelible to the 80's cable TV set. Quality eventually finds its level. Yes it does.

Frank Borzage's 1933 DESIRE finds co-stars Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper involved in...yeah, I'm just gonna assume you're adult enough to fill in the blanks on this one. "Screens" tonight at the Clearview Chelsea Cinema. Bring a Kleenex. Get yer mind outta the gutter.

Anthology Film Archives' trib to overlooked director Delmer Daves concludes tonight with screenings of the talented craftsman's THE LAST WAGON and COWBOY, both prime examples of the filmmaker's postwar desire to revise the role of the Native American on film, still routinely and popularly portrayed as the savage "Injun." As I've chosen these noble efforts earlier in the month I must follow my no double-dip rule and take a different Pick today. Thank heavens a worthy effort screens to fill that void.

Lucio Fulci's cheapie CONAN-bite CONQUEST unspools at the 92YTribeca as part of its Rip Off Cinema series this balmy eve, and should the film itself not tempt fully know that this wonderful venue, one more quality meeting ground for musicians, actors, and, particular to this site's purpose, filmmakers and Cinegeeks, will meet its untimley end in the next few weeks. If you've never attended a film event in this wonderful multimedia space take this opportunity to experience something special that will soon be lost to our community. If you've attended a screening before, even a hundred times before, come pay some last respects to a truly unique venue that gave its all for its audience. Thanks Cristina.
