December 18th 2013. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

New and continuing series today include Film Forum's career retrospective dedicated to studio-era spitfire Barbara Stanwyck, the Film Society's equally essential trib to the masterful CV of filmmaker George Cukor, and MoMA's ongoing Auteurist History of Film. The retro cinema hijinks look a little somethin' like this;

IFC Center

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) Dir; Frank Capra

Film Forum

REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955) Dir; Nicholas Ray

THE FURIES (1950) Dir; Anthony Mann

ANNIE OAKLEY (1935) Dir; George Stevens

Film Society of Lincoln Center

HOLIDAY (1938) Dir; George Cukor

TWO-FACED WOMAN (1941) Dir; George Cukor

SHAME (1968) Dir; Ingmar Bergman

KEEPER OF THE FLAME (1942) Dir; George Cukor

MoMA

GERTRUD (1964) Dir; Carl Theodore Dreyer

DESPERATE LIVING (1977) Dir; John Waters

Today's Pick? Mostly due to the fact that its been the subject of great aghast, at least amongst my Cinegeek brethren, that Anthony Mann's THE FURIES still takes up residence on my Bucket List, I'm picking the 2-fer of that film and George Stevens' ANNIE OAKLEY as part of Film Forum's excellent, comprehensive Barbara Stanwyck trib. Plus, as you're by now well and perhaps even uncomfortably aware, I got myself a thing for Babz. And me and her don't care what society thinks about it. Nyeh, suckahz!

For more info on these and all NYC's classic screenings in the last month of 2013 click on the interactive calendar on the upper right hand side of the page. And be sure to follow me on Facebook and Twitter! Back tomorrow with a brand spankin' new Pick, til then be firm, be fair, be sure, beware, on your guard and take care. 'Cause there's much temptation. Sing it, Sam!
