February 23rd 2014. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Today's continuing series include IFC Center's inventively monickered American Hustlers, Film Forum's massive The Complete Hitchcock, Moving Image's effusive See It Big! Musicals, and Anthology Film Archives' weekend trib to Russ Meyer & Roger Ebert. The cinematic debauchery is as follows;

IFC Center

THE STING (1973) Dir; George Roy Hill

Film Forum

NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock

THE LODGER (1927) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock

TO CATCH A THIEF (1955) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock

Nitehawk Cinema

THE KARATE KID (1984) Dir; John G. Avildsen

Museum of the Moving Image

NETWORK (1976) Dir; Sidney Lumet

Special screening hosted by Keith Olbermann and author David Itzkoff (Mad as Hell: The Making of Network)

SHOWBOAT (1936) Dir; James Whale

Mid-Manhattan Library

SUMMER STOCK (1950) Dir; Charles Walters

Anthology Film Archives

UP! (1976) Dir; Russ Meyer

BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRA-VIXENS (1979) Dir; Russ Meyer

Today's Pick? I always feel like I just chose this mere weeks ago and should exclude it from the pack, but should that even be the case I can't think of a more essential screening today than Sidney Lumet's prescient masterpiece NETWORK, unspooling at MoMI in 35mm to commemorate journalist Dave Itzkoff's new book Mad as Hell: The Making of Network. TV anchor Keith Olbermann will be on hand to moderate and provide oh you know exactly what who're we kidding? Attendance mandatory. And stick around for SHOWBOAT. There's your day. You're welcome.

For more info on these and all NYC's classic film screenings in February '14 click on the interactive calendar on the upper right hand side of the page. And be sure to follow me on both Facebook, where I provide further info and esoterica on the rep film circuit and star birthdays, and Twitter, where I provide a daily feed for the day's screenings and other blathery. Back tomorrow with a brand new Pick, til then if you can't work up a winter passion for me you owe me your goddam loyalty at least! Wait, where am I again...?

P. S. Should you be feeling charitable during this harsh weather period please remember to check in with the good folks over at Occupy Sandy. Some of our NY neighbors are still feeling the effects of last year's hurricane. Be a mensch.
