April 23rd 2014. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

How is it April 23rd already? How can the Yankees presently have put 20 games in the books by now (a 12-8 record, I thank ye)? Is it possible three days have passed since both Easter and the international celebration of all things THC graced our dispositions? In other words M'gawd, this month has flown, which must mean (gasp) I've actually been enjoying myself. This bodes ill for the speed of the coming months, which will only surely get more interesting in terms of both activity on the rep film circuit and weather beneficial to its attendance. I'll just have to learn how to slow time down best I can, in the meantime let's look at a few of the causes for this month's sudden velocity.

New and continuing series today include An Auteurist History of Film and Marco Bellocchio: A Retrospective at MoMA, and Back with a Vengeance at BAM Cinematek. The hijinks are thus;

Film Forum

GODZILLA (1954) Dir; Ishiro Honda

MoMA

BELLE DE JOUR (1967) Dir; Luis Buñuel

HENRY IV (1984) Dir; Marco Bellochio

BAM Cinematek

SUDDEN IMPACT (1983) Dir; Clint Eastwood

BURY ME AN ANGEL (1972) Dir: Barbara Peeters

Nitehawk Cinema

9 TO 5 (1980) Dir; Colin Higgins

Today's Pick? BAM's Back with a Vengeance series, a redux of their excellent February Vengeance is Hers program, is a mighty tempting proposition. However, on a day when Ishiro Honda's original '54 GODZILLA screens its penultimate at Film Forum only one other cinematic icon, also of foreign origin but less nuclear fallout related, can claim the brass ring today. Or maybe the brass bed would be more appropraite. Catherine Deneuve stars as the unsatisfied housewife who drifts into a surreptitious second life/career as a brothel member in Luis Buñuel's BELLE DE JOUR, screening as part of MoMA's Auteurist History of Film series. I believe that synopsis is all the selling I need do. Ya want scholarly, read Kent Jones.

For more info on these and all NYC's classic film screenings in April '14 click on the interactive calendar on the upper right hand side of the page. For the monthly overview listen in to the inaugural podcast! And be sure to follow me on both Facebook, where I provide further info and esoterica on the rep film circuit and star birthdays, and Twitter, where I provide a daily feed for the day's screenings and other blathery. Back tomorrow with a brand new Pick, til then is it awful to speculate on exactly how much Catherine Deneuve's character charged by the hour? Converted to modern Euro? Y'know, purely for research purposes okay I'll stop now.

P. S. Should you be feeling charitable during this harsh weather period please remember to check in with the good folks over at Occupy Sandy. Some of our NY neighbors are still feeling the effects of the 2012 hurricane. Be a mensch.
