September 9th 2014. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Tough choices to be made on NYC's rep film circuit today. Two of 'em, to be exact. A last grab for greatness, or at the very least relevance, by one of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers, and a canny and caustic tale of a soldier's desertion during WWI. Dear god, it is NFL season, isn't it?

Today's lone ongoing series is The Great War: A Cinematic Legacy at MoMA. The cinematic artillery exchange be thus;

Film Forum

FEDORA (1978) Dir; Billy Wilder

MoMA

The Great War: A Cinematic Legacy

KING AND COUNTRY (1964) Dir; Joseph Losey

Today's Pick? I'm goin' with Billy Wilder's FEDORA, a film I caught years ago and registered naught but head-shake over, but once more snags my intrigue, especially as several trustworthy comrades have attested to its misunderstood brilliance in the interim, and because it unspools, albeit as a series of 1's and 0's, in a brand new DCP restoration. Let's see if Billy had one last great one in him. If not, hey, Film Forum's popcorn is aces.
