October 2014! Joe Mank, Frankie Capra, and Halloween Hijinks! Trick or Treat, Stockahz!

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Whassap Stockahz!?!

I know what you're thinking; how in Buddah's name is it October already? How has baseball already entered the playoff season, the midterm elections' final lap arrived, the Xmas decorations invaded the local Duane Reade, let alone the Halloween candy that appeared stacked like hay bales at the beginning of September? Dear god, we seem to collectively wail at Winter's first spine chill, how have we gotten here so fast?

Well, thankfully, this site has nothing to do with matters of philosophical import. I'm here to gab about the flickers, kiddos! And October '14 is chock full of celluloid magic. The still unfolding 52nd annual New York Film Fest, offering up restorations of works by Alfred Hitchcock, Anthony Mann and The Archers, not to mention its 21-film salute to the master craftsman Joseph L. Mankiewicz, which I will be covering in detail! Film Forum, presenting its own massive filmmaker tribute to none other than Frank Capra, the man who asserted auteur status well before Andre Bazin invented the theory. BAM Cinématek's Retro Metro and Puppets on Film. Anthology Film Archives' Bridges Over Argentinian Film and Industrial Terror. MoMA's annual salute to film preservation To Save and Project, and the newly begun Acteurism: The Emergence of Ann Sheridan. Museum of the Moving Image's See It Big! Horror. Nitehawk Cinema's Final Girl and A Nite To Dismember 2. Tarrytown Music Hall's Monsters on Main Street! Even the normally non-repertory preoccupied Village East Cinema chimes in with Hitchcocktober. Hey, I didn't name the series, I'm just beating the drum.

We've got a lot to look forward to, this with the Landmark Jersey Loews yet to announce their end-of-the-month shenanigans. It's going to be a classic film fan's paradise, so keep up to date by checking the interactive calendar on the upper right side of the page, and listening to the monthly podcast overview of October's rep flick doings. For the record today's Pick is the 9pm screening of Joseph L. Mankiwicz's ALL ABOUT EVE at Alice Tully Hall, introduced by none other than the director's widow, Rosemary. It's my understanding, however, that Margot Channing is used to a little competition.

So invade the territory known as the outside world, kiddos, if only for the short time expenditure that sees you from apartment door to theater's. I'll be lookin' for ya!
