October 15th 2014. Pick of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Now that summer '14 has finally arrived for a day or two, I suggest you follow my lead; by which I mean slather on the sunblock, dig out all your loud tiki-themed clothing, and head to a nice, cool movie theater to beat the heat. Say what you will about my quiet desperation regarding the slow extinction of that unique phenomenon once known as a Manhattan summer. I'll take what I can get.
Ongoing series today include CAPRA! at Film Forum, Acteurism: The Emergence of Ann Sheridan at MoMA, and Matías Piñeiro Selects: Bridges Over Argentinian Cinema at Anthology Film Archives. Guess which series I'm ill-versed in? No matter: to the venues, mon freres!
Film Forum

SO THIS IS LOVE* (1928) Dir; Frank Capra
*Live piano accompaniment by Steve Sterner
MoMA
Acteurism: The Emergence of Ann Sheridan
JUKE GIRL (1941) Dir; Curtis Bernhardt
Anthology Film Archives
Matías Piñeiro Selects: Bridges Over Argentinian Cinema
WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS (1971) Dir; Edgardo Cozarinsky
Today's Pick? I've been neglectful of one director's career retrospective in favor of another's, perhaps unfairly. But now that the latter has concluded I can fully invest my focus in the former, which has some ways to go I thank ye. So with that sentiment fully embraced I endorse today's CAPRA! series at Film Forum, in particular the unspooling of 1928's SO THIS IS LOVE, which will be accompanied by the Forum's stalwart Steinwayist Steve Sterner. Don't however, feel limited by my singular proffer; should you want to stick around for a screening of Frank Capra's ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, because, c'mon, you're already there, you're leaving so soon? Sit awhile, we'll discuss.

P. S. We're swiftly returning to the winter climate, and believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability.
