October 21st 2014. Pick of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

The 110th face-off between baseball teams belonging to the American and National leagues begins tonight at 8:07pm. I'm a massive fan, fully embroiled in the match-up drama: Heartland versus West Coast, recent small money champ versus ancient small money champ, and of course, original rules versus the modern game. And yet I can't think of a better competition occurring today than three Resnais screenings going head-to-head-to-head. And I don't even like the guy. You want my job?
Ongoing series today include CAPRA! at Film Forum, By Marguerite Duras at the Film Society, Alain Resnais: Time, Memory and Imagination at the French Institute, and Monsters on Main Street! at the Tarrytown Music Hall. The wimwamerry be thus;
Film Forum
PLATINUM BLONDE (1931) Dir; Frank Capra
THE MIRACLE WOMAN (1931) Dir; Frank Capra
HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR (1959) Dir; Alain Resnais
Film Society of Lincoln Center
MODERATO CANTABILE (1960) Dir; Peter Brook
AGATHA ET LES LECTURES ILLIMITEES (1981) Dir; Marguerite Duras
HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR (1959) Dir; Alain Resnais
French Institute/Alliance Française
Alain Resnais: Time, Memory and Imagination
MURIEL (1963) Dir; Alain Resnais
Tarrytown Music Hall
Monsters on Main Street!
PSYCHO (1960) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock
Today's Pick? As trib to what is still America's pastime, I'm going with what once was colorfully known as a Double-Header, antiquated perhaps at our ballparks but still very much a novel notion at our repertory theaters; Film Forum's CAPRA! series, today offering Jean Harlow and Loretta Young in PLATINUM BLONDE and Babz Stanwyck in THE MIRACLE WOMAN, both from 1931. The paltry sum of 14 bucks gains your admission to both screenings. Try gettin' the same value at the ballpark. Well, to be fair, the prices in KC are probably sorta friendly to yer wallet, but okay look this baseball analogy has ultimately failed me. Just check out the movies, we good?

P. S. We're swiftly returning to the winter climate, and believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
