November 2014! To Save and Project, Romantic Anarchist Pt. 2, and Poland Embraces Parliament!

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Hallo, Stockahz! And howthahellareya?!?

I trust that most, if not all of you, have survived one more All Hallow's Eve to welcome in one more All Saint's Day, and November '14 into the bargain, a month that seems, quite frankly, as if it's been the prevalent 30 temperate days since October '12. Mebbe them's just my fragile bones, it will never be fully ascertained.

Anyway, my icy marrow aside, let's focus on this month's repertory cinema! Film Forum brings us seminal cinema from Welles, Resnais and the sainted Howard Hawks. MoMA 's To Save and Project brings us such spared celluloid as Leone's A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, Boorman's EXCALIBUR and Mizoguchi's POPPY. The Film Society concludes their massive Fassbinder retrospective, Moving Image celebrates the silver anniversary of parlimentary Poland, and BAM Cinématek delves into LA's seemingly absent alabaster shadows. It all might seem a lot to take in, which is why I've provided an easily downloadable podcast that covers the entire month's classic film sked. Don't be shy, it's well worth the expenditure of that last 10MB on your iPhone.

So much rep cinema, so little couch time. Which is exactly how I like it, even with my impossibly generous Hulu Plus Criterion access. The rep circuit continues to thrive, the audience supportive, even celebratory. There is still nothing like the big screen when it comes to cinema and the communal experience. And there damn well never will be. For proof, I direct you to the magnificent doc undertaken by Julia Marchese, ex-manager of LA's hugely impactful New Beverly Cinema, one which she has freely offered for viewing here. As optimistic as I have always been in my endeavors, as unquellable I believe the desire for classic cinema screened large, docs like this both support and denounce my beliefs, and as such demand my drum-beating. The world's getting smaller, tech's getting bigger. Somewhere in that mix connoisseurship emerges, and that's a damn shame, because what we really need is enthusiastic town criers. Marchese may count herself among that latter hallowed rank. I myself am still proving myself worthy. Gladly.
