Sooo...finally caught LAST TANGO IN PARIS last night. After all this time. And while it may not boast the same notoriety in an age of YouTube and Two Girls One Cup, it will definitely put me off any congealed cholesterol for he foreseable future. I may even hide the nail clippers for a spell. In other words, bravo Bertolucci.

Today's Pick? I'm sorely tempted to choose Welles' final masterpiece, the sultry, sordid TOUCH OF EVIL, and even though I shouldn't count future unspoolings against it, the knowledge that it's returning to the Forum in 60 or so days in not merely one but all three of its differently finished iterations gives me slight pause at the least. CALIGARI also beckons, as surely as he drew somnabulist Cesare from his closet, but Halloween being still so clearly seen in the rear view mirror makes it somehow less imperative. The Ann Sheridan retro at MoMA very nearly snags my Pick today, even over the likes of Bette Davis' berating of the scenery in Rapper's gothic murder mystery. But, y'know, this being the 5th of November, the Irishman in me finds one title particularly irresistable. I know, I know, bygones and all that, and I do have countless friends from the once-Shakespeared precious stone. But every now and then I can't resist the jab. Did I mention I'm of Irish descent?
Derek Jarman's THE LAST OF ENGLAND screens tonight at BAM Cinématek as part of the series honoring the director, entitled Queer Pagan Punk. Again, I didn't call him those names, BAM did. Redirect your crank e-mail accordingly. But attend the unspooling regardless. Remember remember.
