November 18th 2014. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Polar Vortex. I'd love to say we hardly knew ye. Actually I'd love to say quite a bit more than that but this is a family website. Bastard.

Ongoing series today are limited to Fassbinder: Romantic Anarchist, Part Two at the Film Society and To Save and Project: The 12th MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation at, y'guessed it, MoMA. The quality quirk be thus;

Film Forum

LE JOUR SE LEVE (1939) Dir; Marcel Carné

VERTIGO (1958) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock

Film Society of Lincoln Center

Fassbinder: Romantic Anarchist, Part Two

SHADOW OF ANGELS (1976) Dir; Daniel Schmid

VERONIKA VOSS (1982) Dir; Rainer Werner Fassbinder

LILI MARLEEN (1981) Dir; Rainer Werner Fassbinder

MoMA

To Save and Project: The 12th MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation

CAVE OF THE SILKEN WEB (1927) Dir; Dan Duyu

BAM Cinématek

THE SACRIFICE (1986) Dir; Andrei Tarkovsky

Today's Pick? There's scant time remaining to endorse a remarkable career retro currently gracing one of our finer repertory venues, one that began smack dab in summer's twixt, and so massive and comprehensive it took til now to conclude. Today the Film Society's trib to the Homerically hedonistic Hun includes two efforts from behind the camera and one before it. The latter, Daniel Schmid's SHADOW OF ANGELS, kicks off today's Fass-bender, to be followed by the director's own VERONIKA VOSS and LILI MARLEEN, two of his last and best. A specially-priced ticket gains you a discounted entry to all three films, and seeing as the weather this seemingly-Februaried November day will be most Germanic in nature, this would seem an entirely appropriate choice for your day's expenditure. Beer and cigarettes will, sadly, not be provided. What Fassbinder himself would advise in light of this particular verboten, I'll leave to your speculation.

P. S. We're swiftly returning to the winter climate, and believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability.
