November 19th 2014. Pick of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

It's the kind of cold today that makes the kind of cold commonly referenced regarding its degree of frigidity in comparison to a witch's, um, broomhandle, to make that kind of cold seek out a bonfire in Salem. Which I would normally just call Fenway Park, but that'll just make me pine for spring '15. Oh, damn, too late.
Continuing series this day include Acteurism: The Emergence of Ann Sheridan. 1937-43 and To Save and Project: The 12th MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation at MoMA, and Fassbinder: Romantic Anarchist, Part Two at the Film Society. The kino kerfuffle looks thus;
Film Forum
LE JOUR SE LEVE (1939) Dir; Marcel Carné
MoMA
Acteurism: The Emergence of Ann Sheridan. 1937-43
WINTER CARNIVAL (1939) Dir; Charles F. Reisner
To Save and Project: The 12th MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation
STAGE SISTERS (1964) Dir; Xie Jin
THE CAVE OF THE SILKEN WEB (1927) Dir; Dan Duyu
Film Society of Lincoln Center
Fassbinder: Romantic Anarchist, Part Two
THE STATIONMASTER'S WIFE (1977) Dir; Rainer Werner Fassbinder
BAM Cinématek
THE SACRIFICE (1986) Dir; Andrei Tarkovsky
Today's Pick? I recommended a full day yesterday at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade theater as their glorious Fassbindery unspooled. Seeing as the temp's only plummeted further today I see no reason why I shouldn't advise similar evasive action, if in a venue different, from this ungodly, wuthering gift that comes to us courtesy of our neighbors to the north. That's right, I'm holding YOU responsible for this unseasonable deep freeze, Canadia! It's either you or The Penguin, and I don't see any umbrellas on the sidewalks today.
For the reasonable sum of $36, or the even more reasonable fee of zilch for members, you may take in not one but TWO series today at our beloved and venerable Museum of Modern Art, which amounts to not two but THREE screenings! Can I get a harrumph?!? Charles F. Reisner's WINTER CARNIVAL screens as part of adjunct curator Dave Kehr's excellent new series Acteurism: The Emergence of Ann Sheridan. 1937-43, while Xie Jin's STAGE SISTERS and Dan Duyu's THE CAVE OF THE SILKEN WEB flicker wondrously as part of the annual program To Save and Project. A balanced and healthy menu of both curio and game-change, part of a slowly winding-down series most crucial to the film fanatic. All I gotta say is this: if Ann Sheridan isn't enough to warm you up, freeze.

P. S. We're fully entwined in winter's embrace, and believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm.
