Today's lone series is the nearly-kaput Fassbinder: Romantic Anarchist (Part Two). Hey, it's the last week of the month, you expect your bread to be fresh too? The repertory rapscallionism be thus;

THE SACRIFICE (1986) Dir; Andrei Tarkovsky

Today's Pick? I run hot and cold on Tarkovsky, blissfully immersed in his sci-fi masterwork SOLARIS whenever I view it, irritated by THE MIRROR for its obtuse, pretentious machinations. Undaunted, I remain an eager traveller of the territory he staked out, and tonight I plan to finally cross off a prime destination on his cinematic map, one that's been unspooling in a brand new print, enhancing genius DP Sven Nykvist's auburn and dampened-bronze hues. How poignant a prayer from any Russian circa the Reagan-Gorbachev Cold War era, to concoct a fantasy regarding one man's desire to preserve humanity and its future at the cost of his own soul. I look forward to this greatly.

Andrei Tarkovsky's THE SACRIFICE screens tonight at BAM Cinématek for the final night of its two-week unspool. I see you there, and we enjoy Russian brand of slapstick humor, comrade.
