December 3rd 2014. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Okay, the doctors at Lenox Hill Hospital haven't cleared me for any truly strenuous activity thus far, heart-stoppers like jogging, stair-climbing or even walking, so dire was my tryptophan OD last week. They have, however, cleared me to type this post, and to get some immediate rest after. So I will closely monitor my, um, monitor, and patienty tap out this day's missive. For it is only you, my dear beloved reader, that will bring me through this crippling, debilitating disease known since the 16th century as The Naps. Tap tap tap.

New, continuing, and concluding series today include the Mario Monicelli huggery at Film Forum, the mini and maxi-tribs, respectively, to actress Joan Bennett and filmmaker Robert Altman at MoMA, the Nastassja Kinski fawn at Lincoln Center, and the anticlimatic-by-comparison-sounding Overdue at BAM Cinématek. The luminous leftovers be thus;

Film Forum

WE WANT THE COLONELS (1973) Dir; Mario Monicelli

FOR LOVE AND GOLD (1966) Dir; Mario Monicelli

CARO MICHELE (1976) Dir; Mario Monicelli

MoMA

Acteurism: Joan Bennett

WILD GIRL (1932) Dir; Joan Bennett

Robert Altman

THE DELINQUENTS (1957) Dir; Robert Altman

Film Society of Lincoln Center

Nastassja Kinski: From the Heart

ONE FROM THE HEART (1982) Dir; Francis Ford Coppola

THE MOON IN THE GUTTER (1984) Dir; Jean-Jacques Beineix

CAT PEOPLE (1982) Dir; Paul Schrader

BAM Cinématek

Overdue

DARKER THAN AMBER (1970) Dir; Robert Clouse

Today's Pick? The Thanksgiving holiday curtailed a great many of my plans; the midnight posting of the December '14 calendar, the yet-to-be-heard podcast regarding the same month (tonight, kids, I promise!), and a few films here and there that deserved but were denied my full attention. It eases my embarassment somewhat to know that other, more esteemed institutions and their grand plans were also the victims of similar foiling, in the form of relatives, tryptophan, and weather most Canadian in nature. The latter serving to not merely curtail but wholly derail the schemes of Lincoln Center's Film Society, sadly denying them the in-person presence of their current fete, the luminous, maddeningly sensual, uncommonly talented Nastassja Kinski, whose travel plans were undone by the inclement weather last week, and thus her scheduled intros and Q&As.

Now, we can collectively pout over this spot of bad tidings, but let's get real here; not a one of us can pout worth a damn compared to Klaus' daughter. So let's pack the bruised feelings away for another, more appropriate occasion, say one where Jean-Luc Godard DOES attend one of his screenings, and head to Lincoln Center for a glimpse at one of our still-brightest talents at work on the big screen. Where she belongs.

Francis Ford Coppola's ONE FROM THE HEART, Jean-Jacques Beineix's THE MOON IN THE GUTTER, and Paul Schrader's CAT PEOPLE all screen today, the final of the Film Society's trib to star Nastassja Kinski. A special discounted tik is available for those of you lucky and smart enough to attend all three. The lady herself might not be there today in person, but her person shall be.
