Today's Pick? What best manner does the rep film circuit this day afford the resolute Cinegeek, one wishing to bid farewell our collective 2014? It's been a good year to be sure, filled with the discovery of new friends, the conquering of new challenges, and the wonder of existence itself ever expanded. Yet it's been a hard one by all accounts as well, tragedies opportunized, bitterness' flames fanned, hope for connection and communication sometimes seemingly, increasingly, impossibly beyond reach. What better way, I ask, to shoo off the departing year and welcome the forthcoming, than bearing witness to disgruntled enmity's alchemical transformation to true love. And with free booze no less!
Ernst Lubitsch's THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER unspools all day today at the Film Forum. Attendees of the 7pm and 9:15pm screenings will find themselves the lucky beneficiaries of a free champagne toast. As no equal opportunity exists for the classic film fan to avail him and/or herself of such pure and exquisite bubbly both bottled and projected, The Touch gets to play Old Man '14. As is usually the scenario he will no doubt jazz up the proceedings and send the ho-hum packin'. To old aquaintance, Stockahz.
