January 8th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Well, last night I got to personally witness William Friedkin as he introduced and discussed his all-time fave and raison d'être, a little sumptin' titled CITIZEN KANE. Top THAT, remaining days of 2015!

New and continuing series this day includes
Film Forum's trib to cinema provocateur Orson Welles, MoMA's trib to onscreen vixen Joan Bennett, the Film Society's hosannah to John Huston, and the Nitehawk's resurrection of damp overcoats and lewd intentions. The colorful cacophany is as follows;

Film Forum

Orson Welles

CITIZEN KANE (1941) Dir; Orson Welles

MoMA

Acteurism: Joan Bennett

WEDDING PRESENT (1936) Dir; Roy Del Ruth

Film Society of Lincoln Center

Let There Be Light: The Films of John Huston

ACROSS THE PACIFIC (1942) Dir; John Huston

THE BARBARIAN AND THE GEISHA () Dir; John Huston

BowTie Chelsea Cinema

DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944) Dir; Billy Wilder

Nitehawk Cinema

The Deuce

STRANGE BEHAVIOR (1980) Dir; Michael Laughlin

Today's Pick? Just about every screening on the sked today tempts. Joan Bennett entices, Babz Stanwyck enthralls, and Mary Astor, well, she enthuses. Sorry, that last bite of the steak misrepresented the meal. No offense, Astor estate. While this listing represents a most promising Some of the Threes, Mary Astor notwithstanding, I defer to a choice which emboldens behavior much less approved. A film begat by the influences of unwelcome, marginal and downright taboo cinema from the 40's, 50's and 60's, boasting parentage monickered H. G. Lewis, John Waters, and Douglas Sirk in equal measure. A film that purposed a trilogy, and which ended sadly short of that mark, providing two exhibits amply evident of a third's production. Let's dig what remains to be dug, however, shall we?

Michael Laughlin's STRANGE BEHAVIOR unspools tonight in glorious 35mm at the Nitehawk Cinema this eve as part of their monthly exaltation of Times Square's glory Grindhouse era, The Deuce! I won't call my parents if you don't call yours!
