January 20th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

So when does football season start?

Come to think of it, when does the Knicks season end?

I diverge.

Continuing series today includes the Orson Welles smoochery at Film Forum, Eccentrics of French Comedy at the French Institute/Alliance Française, and the New York Jewish Film Fest 2015 at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. The silver halide shenanigans be thus;

Film Forum

Orson Welles

COMPULSION () Dir; Richard Fleischer

THE LONG HOT SUMMER () Dir;

French Institute/Alliance Française

Eccentrics of French Comedy

L’AMOUR C’EST GAI, L’AMOUR C’EST TRISTE (1968) Dir; Jean Daniel Pollet

MoMA

THE BUBBLE (1964) Dir; Arch Oboler

Film Society of Lincoln Center

New York Jewish Film Fest 2015

FEAR AND DESIRE (1953) Dir; Stanley Kubrick

Today's Pick? Much as Kubrick's first feature length attempt tempts, and the Orson Welles scene-mastication beckons, I strive always to fill my cinematic lacuna. Therefore I make of my choice today a film I've never heard of, by a director unbeknownst to me, about something French. By which I imply in the latter statement, sexual activity which would scandalize a recovering Irish-Catholic such as myself. Hey, I'm a Bronx-Celt. A stiff breeze makes me blush. Y'follow?

Jean Daniel Pollet's L’AMOUR C’EST GAI, L’AMOUR C’EST TRISTE unspools in glorious 35mm as part of the series Eccentrics of French Comedy, at that bastion of Gallic reverence, Manhattan's own French Institute/Alliance Française! I love this joint, and not just because of my Francophiliac bent; the screening space is impeccable, the projection and sound quality of the highest order. they care about film here, and about the film experience. If you haven't ever taken in an unspooling at this space, treat yourself in the new year. If you're familair with the venue, I'll probably see you there tonight.

P. S. We're fully entwined in winter's embrace, and believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm.
