January 27th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

SNOW DAY!!! SNOW DAY!!! The Snowpocalypse has cancelled life as we know it, and wild abandon, or quilts 'n mallow laden cocoa, are decreed this day's order! Huzzah to nature's awesome power! Three cheers for the humbling destructive forces of the elements! Bully, I say, to the might of the wind and snow and what?

Snowpocalypse never happened?

The city isn't crippled by mounds of the pure undriven white stuff?

We can freely stroll to our nearest pizza parlor and order a slice? Or to our nabe dealer and pick up a few grams of the pure undriven white stuff ya see what I did there?

Well, why am I the last to know these things? Way to go, people who should nudge me awake and inform me!

Well, it's still a sorta hard call to make. So many venues pre-cancelled their scheduled events in what they believed would be the wake of a storm of historic (not my word) proportions, that I'm now no longer sure which are going forward with their screenings. As we simply got a cute frosting here in the city, I'm going to assume it'll be biz as usual, but I urge you to check in advance to see if all systems are GO. Here be today's potential, probable shenanigans;

Film Forum

Orson Welles

THE BLACK ROSE (1950) Dir; Henry Hathaway

PRINCE OF FOXES (1949) Dir; Henry King

MoMA

I AM SUZANNE! (1933) Dir; Rowland V. Lee

Today's Pick? SNOW DAY!!!

Oh, hell, okay, it's the Orson Welles two-fer at Film Forum, Hathaway's THE BLACK ROSE, and King's PRINCE OF FOXES, a pair of costume dramas that see Welles translate his stage theatricality fully to the more intimate screen, as was his occasional, scene-chewing wont. If you missed the gravitas and dire of the neologically monickered Snowpocalypse, a title only slightly less silly than Sharknado, than these twin visits with the great Welles will mostly sate yer appetite.
