January 28th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Well, maybe we didn't quite get the snow day we all wanted yesterday. But we got another day. I think that's the real takeaway from the near-catastrophic climatic conditions threatened, that hovered oh so closely above our fair metropolis the eve prior, yet spared the citizens of NYC its wrath. Massachusetts cannot boast of a similar positive outcome. Should you be of the inclination to complain about the mistaken predictions, the over-reach of the forecasters, the proclivity of apocalyptic pronouncements provided courtesy the 24hr cable news cycle, I ask simply the following; would you currently be happier had they been proven correct?

This is my way of saying I'm glad the worst didn't happen. So let's get to the rep film meshugenah.

New and continuing series this day include the Orson Welles trib at Film Forum, Adjunct Curator Dave Kehr's courting of raven-haired siren Joan Bennett at MoMA, and the sleekly and subtly entitled French Classics of the 1930's-40's at Anthology Film Archives. Let the wimwammery commence;

Film Forum

Orson Welles 100

IT'S ALL TRUE (1943-93) Dirs; Welles/Wilson, Meisel, Krohn

MR. ARKADIN (1955) Dir; Orson Welles

MoMA

Acteurism: Joan Bennett

THE WOMAN ON THE BEACH (1947) Dir; Jean Renoir

I AM SUZANNE! (1933) Dir; Rowland V. Lee

Anthology Film Archives

French Classics of the 1930's-40's

THE STORY OF A CHEAT (1944) Dir; Sasha Guitry

UNE SI JOLIE PETITE PLAGE (1948) Dir; Yves Allégret

Today's Pick? How can I not, in the face of these weather conditions inclement, choose Jean Renoir's Summer-y entitled WOMAN ON THE BEACH, screening at MoMA as part of their wonderful celebration of the Acteurist talents of one Joan Bennett? Answer: I CAN'T! The provocative, alluring, and forever mysterious Ms. Bennett takes top honors this day. Should you care to examine how something icy might melt all about her, I urge you not to miss this series.
