Today's Pick? Hard to say no to three distinct filmmakers from the groundbreaking 70's, Woody, Marty and Steve. But I must. Equally difficult to spurn works of significant import by directors like Sturges, cult voices like Steph Rothman and Kathleen Collins, and, of course, extremely angsty to take sides against my first hero, one John Carpenter. Yet, I must direct the Kliegs tis day toward another singular voice, one that also bucked the tide, perhaps without that intent, but fully up to the emblematic task once embraced. How do I love Ida Lupino? Let me list the ways...
Ms. Lupino's THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS and THE YOUNG LOVERS screen today at MoMA as part of the series Carte Blanche - Women Writing the Language of Film! Be a man! Support the gender not your own!
