February 28th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet it should be noted, in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can say only this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most...human.

- Captain James Tiberius Kirk

Thank you Leonard Nimoy. And in the best possible display of abject defiance of the laws of the natural world, we will summarily refuse to allow your departure. Your katra remains in our hands.

Today's lone continuing series programmed amidst a busy sked are the Gordon Willis toast at Astoria's Moving Image, and the terrific Black & White 'Scope: American Cinema at BAM Cinématek. Let the Ju-Ju Bee jollility commence!

Today's Pick? Despite the best efforts of fave helmers Loach, Wilder, and the mighty Hawks, this weekend seems to sorta belong to Woody Allen, as he is granted the deep-body massage from both Queens and Brooklyn this day, Astoria's Moving Image and the Brooklyn Academy of Music to be specific. So I'm offering a trip-feature of the Woodman today which contains within its parameters a genuine two-fer. It involves a most inconvenient borough-hop, yet what better way to catch the man's best work than to have a kvetch at the ready?

Woody Allen's INTERIORS and BROADWAY DANNY ROSE unspool at Museum of the Moving Image, and then, if you horseshoe your way in the subway underground fast enough via the N train, you may arrive in time for the late screening of his 1979 masterpeice, MANHATTAN, unfolding at BAM. They are presented to us as part of a Gordon Willis trib and a series dedicated to Black & White 'Scope, respectively, which only futher proves the man's reach in the world of cinema. Which has always been much longer than his physical reach for the stuff at the back of the high shelf. But I digress. Stuart Allen Konisberg is one of the giants of the form. I'm grateful for his continued presence. And I'd gladly reach for that thing at the back of the high shelf for him. Y'know, depending on the morality of the thing reached for. Wasn't it Kierkergaard who said...no wait maybe it was Kant, I'm always mixing up my K philosopher/demagogues. It reminds me of this conversation I had over a corned beef and Swiss sandwich at Katz's delicatessan, or no, wait, it reminds me of the sandwich. Hold on, let me do my breathing exercises.
