March 19th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Apologies, Stockahz. I must admit the previous evening's Saint Patrick's Day festivities interfered, ultimately, with yesterday's post. Which, to be fair, I DID attempt, and after a good sound sleepin'-it-off gave a sober read, and thanked whatever good sense was left in me at 9am of the 18th for convincing me to drop it. For the record, I don't hate De Palma as much as 15 pints of Guinness want me to. Much as I'd like to agree with the black gold, nope. Ain't gonna do it.

Continuing series today include the Kong-sized crush on Ginger Rogers from MoMA, and Black & White 'Scope: American Cinema at BAM Cinématek. The tomfoolery be thus;

Film Forum

THE TALES OF HOFFMANN (1951) Dirs; Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger

MoMA

Acteurism: Ginger Rogers

I'LL BE SEEING YOU (1944) Dir; Mitchell Liesen

BAM Cinématek

Black & White 'Scope: American Cinema

THE HAUNTING (1963) Dir; Robert Wise

BowTie Chelsea Cinema

TOUCH OF EVIL (1957) Dir; Orson Welles

Today's Pick? Well the HOFFMANN visit has been extended, giving me an extra week to make it my Pick, in order to focus the Kliegs on more time-sensitive screenings. So Final Jeopardy today consists of returning champs Ginger Rogers, Robert Wise and Orson Welles. Classic works of romance, horror and noir, respectively. What to do what to do...

Oh hell, I've recently made EVIL my Pick as part of January's Wellesfest at Film Forum, and I have one more day to fête the luminous Miss Rogers. So let's go with the booing and the bumping-in-the-night. Robert Wise's THE HAUNTING unspools in glorious monochrome 70mm tonight as the closing selection of BAM Cinématek's awesome series Black & White 'Scope: American Cinema! Should you find yourself the recipient of a popcorn shower at some point during tonight's screening, don't panic, BAM isn't haunted: that'll just be me clinging to my bejeezus for the umpteenth time.

P. S. We're mercifully feeling the loosening of winter's embrace, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
