April 7th 2015. Pick of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

May I just express a mere modicum of gratitude that winter seems finally to be over, and that the only ice we might be exposed to going forward will by skated upon by a playoff-bound Rangers team? Not that I'm a hockey fan, mind yaz, but it'll be good to watch a NY team pursue the trophy once more after a few years of dejection. I'm not looking at you Yankees, you've given me so many trophies they hadda build a whole new stadium to hold 'em. I'm also not looking at you Knicks, mainly because, well, I'm just not looking at you. In fact, let's revert focus and discuss watching movie screens. But go Rangers.
Continuing series today include Haute Couture on Film at the French Institute, or Alliance Française, and Dick Miller: Onscreen and In Person! at Anthology Film Archives. The blustery box-office be thus;
Film Forum
IMITATION OF LIFE (1959) Dir; Douglas Sirk
French Institute/Alliance Française
FUNNY FACE (1957) Dir; Stanley Donen
Anthology Film Archives
Dick Miller: Onscreen and In Person!
THE HOWLING (1981) Dir; Joe Dante
Today's Pick? A tough one. All three films screen fairly regularly in our movie-mad metropolis, so I think I must choose between the venues. I've just chosen the Dick Miller shenanigans at AFA over the weekend, but it's been a spell since I shined the Kliegs on Film Forum. However, it's been an even longer lapse regarding another venue, one of my faves. Excellent screening space, precise and perspicacious programming, and a complimentary glass of wine and sharp conversation post-screening. I adore this joint, and it's been far too long, so I'm throwing my lot in with it.
Stanley Donen's FUNNY FACE unspools its 1's and 0's in a glorious DCP resto today at the French Institute/Alliance Française, as kickoff to the CinéSalon mini-series Haute Couture on Film! Je suis un lucky bastárd!

P. S. We're mercifully feeling the loosening of winter's embrace, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm.
