April 16th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

So tonight, it turns out, is the recording session for the site's new podcast, a format change that hopefully will prove a bit more popular than the previous one. I'm thinking the debate over a dress's color and the exact date of Cheryl's birthday will be major ratings boosters. Maybe I'll throw in a segment hosted by my cat just for insurance. We shall see.

New and continuing series this day include Strictly Sturges at Film Forum, Acteurism: Joel McCrea at MoMA, The Vertigo Effect at BAM, Old School Kung-Fu Fest 2015: Enter the Ninja! at Anthology Film Archives, and the gloriously grubby monthly trib to Times Square's glorious grindhouse past, The Deuce at the Nitehawk Cinema. The unapologetically unhinged unspoolery be thus;

Film Forum

Strictly Sturges

DIAMOND JIM (1935) Dir; Edward Sutherland

THE POWER AND THE GLORY (1933) Dir; William K. Howard

MoMA

Acteurism: Joel McCrea

BARBARY COAST (1935) Dirs; Howard Hawks/William Wyler

BAM Cinématek

The Vertigo Effect

VERTIGO (1958) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock

Anthology Film Archives

Old School Kung-Fu Fest 2015: Enter the Ninja!

ENTER THE NINJA (1981) Dir; Menahem Golan

DUEL TO THE DEATH (1983) Dir; Chin Siu-tung

BowTie Chelsea Cinemas

BACK STREET (1961) Dir; David Miller

Nitehawk Cinema

The Deuce

FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE (1977) Dir; Robert Endelson

Today's Pick? A crowded field today. CROW-DED! On top of the returning champs, the Sturges and McCrea mani/pedis at Film Forum and MoMA, respectively, new contestants like BAM's trib to Hitch's most overrated flick and AFA's Ninja-fest fight for some love today. The way to a Cinegeek's heart, however, is through his/her stomach, and it's been nearly a month since I celebrated what is surely the best root beer 'n tater tots combo one may avail themselves of in the five boroughs. So the choice, unlike my apartment windows, is clear.

Robert Endelson's notorious race-bait exploitation miasma FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE unspools in a beautifully-battered 35mm print tonight as part of the Nitehawk Cinema's magnificent monthly trib to the slum row cinema experience, magisterially entitled The Deuce. No, there won't be a theaterfull of seedy trenchcoats, no there won't be actual martial arts battles in the aisles. Must I, however, reiterate the importance of the magical combo of root beer 'n tots? In Aziz Ansari's words, treat yo'self!

P. S. We're mercifully feeling the loosening of winter's embrace, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
