April 25th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Now is the Spring of our discontent made inglorious chaff by this f***ing Winter that WON'T EVER GO AWAY! Again, I'm completely willing to sacrifice A-Rod in a Wicker Man up at the Cloisters to get the job done. The jail time is minimal, I'm told.

Continuing series today include The Vertigo Effect at BAM Cinématek and Art of the Real 2015 at the Lincoln Center. The zoetrope zaniness be thus;

Today's Pick? To spotlight an increasingly expensive yet no more efficient MTA, to celebrate what might've been NYC's best era, in terms of character if not economy, and lastly but not least to bring attention to a venue that, much like that 70's Manhattan, demands championing and offers somewhat miraculous access to a bygone time, I proudly select a genuine movie palace from the 20's and what might be the defining NYC flick of the Me decade. And I'm okay with that, you got a problem? Huh???

Joe Sargent's THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 unspools in glorious, perhaps tatteredly glorious 35mm, at the Landmark Jersey Loews. True enthusiasts might want to arrive early for the first half of the bill, 1980's AIRPLANE!, from the ZAZ boys. In either event, you cant go wrong at this restored movie palace, replete with $1 popcorn and candy, and a 50 ft wide screen that will leave you as breathless as that third rail. Gesundheit!

P. S. We're mercifully feeling the loosening of winter's embrace, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
