I believe I have emerged fully intact from both last week's Marvel Movie Marathon and the subsequent juice purge/24-hour blood transfusion to ensure the continuance of my mortal coil. Docs say my diabetes has now reached a curable plateau, my liver has regenrated from its pâté status, and as it turns out the parts of my brain that I lost I never really needed to begin with. So that makes me feel alarm clock broccoli preponderance snagjvknvowe4rfdjknciuh;oweioe'ovicn'orthgo5ihg'o5
Today's lone series is CinéSalon: Haute Couture on Film over at the French Institute/Alliance Française. The thin but delicious movie menu be thus;
Film Forum
FORBIDDEN GAMES (1952) Dir; René Clément
French Institute/Alliance Française
CinéSalon: Haute Couture on Film
THE RULES OF THE GAME (1939) Dir; Jean Renoir
MoMA
MIKEY AND NICKY (1976) Dir; Elaine May
Today's Pick? As I plan to attend May's masterpiece and Clément's grim treatise on childhood and war sometime later this week, I fins myself with one lone option left on the calendar. but what an option it is. Jean Renoir's glorious dissertation on class conflict, a none-too-subtle melodrama that details why the excesses of peacetime must inevitably lead to war, unspools tonight in glorious 35mm. Actually, my love for the other two films well-documented at this point, this Renoir gem would best any scheduled screenings today. It's an immaculate piece of work. Find out for yourself.
Renoir's THE RULES OF THE GAME screens twice today, 4pm and 7:30pm, at the French Institute/Alliance Française, as part of their series CinéSalon: Haute Couture on Film. The guest speaker is Anne-Katrin Titze, film critic, journalist and professor. The screening is followed by a complimentary wine gabfest. Plus they'll be handing out free money afterwards, just in case the rest of the entertainments and amenities haven't quite won you over yet. Okay, I'm joking about the free money, it actually couldn't compete with the rest of the program anyway.

P. S. We seem to be entering, finally, the warm cuddle of the sun's friendlier disposition, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm.
