May 12th 2015. Pick of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

May 2015, Bebeh! The warm weather is just settling in to our winter-beaten burg. How much finer an experience traipsing between repertory screens when the winds bathe us in a balmy 80 degree breeze? Thankfully we've got plenty on the classic film horizon to keep us more than occupied. So for now let's enjoy the simple choices before the slate crowds.
Continuing series this day include The Apu Trilogy at Film Forum, CinéSalon: Haute Couture on Film at the French Institute/Alliance Française, and Japan Speaks Out!: Early Japanese Talkies at MoMA. The tomfoolery be thus;
Film Forum
PATHER PANCHALI (1955) Dir; Satyajit Ray
French Institute/Alliance Française
CinéSalon: Haute Couture on Film
HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE (1953) Dir; Jean Negulesco
MoMA
Japan Speaks Out!: Early Japanese Talkies
OKOTO AND SESUKE (1935) Dir; Yasujiro Smiazu
ACROSS THE EQUATOR (1936) Dir; Eiji Tsuburaya
Today's Pick? Satyajit Ray's debut feature screens for weeks yet to come, so I don't feel it an imperative. Yet. MoMA's program devoted to early sound cinema from Japan is admittedly a mightily tempting prospect, as I'm green as ivy when it comes to most foreign cinema, and these titles are as important to the medium's culture as anything Hollywood also produced post-sound and pre-war. However, three women of distinct cultivation and impeccable femininity grace the screen this eve, in a glorious DCP estimation of their original CinemaScope/Technicolor iteration. So I could choose Indian Neo-realism and the Golden Age of the Japanese studio system, but ya think I'm really gonna choose that over a chance to hang with Betty, Marilyn and Slim? Good luck to ya then.
Jean Negulesco's HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE spins its digital 1's and 0's twice today at the French Institute/Alliance Française as part of their excellent current series CinéSalon: Haute Couture on Film. Damn does this movie ever make me wish I was a millionaire.

P. S.
