Just to illustrate once more, one man's Memorial Day weekend shenanigans is another man's unfortunate detention in a Belgium airport. I kid The Sprouts, they terrify me!
Continuing series this day include Deneuve X 8 at IFC Center, The Apu Trilogy at Film Forum, Actuerism: Joel McCrea at MoMA, and "Written" by Philip Yordan at Anthology Film Archives. The indoor picnickry be thus;
IFC Center
THE LAST METRO (1980) Dir; François Truffaut
BLUE VELVET (1986) Dir; David Lynch
Film Forum
APUR SANSAR (The World of Apu) Dir; Satyajit Ray
MoMA
THEY SHALL HAVE MUSIC (1939) Dir; Archie Mayo
Anthology Film Archives
MEN IN WAR (1957) Dir; Anthony Mann
JOHNNY GUITAR (1954) Dir; Nicholas Ray
Landmark Sunshine Cinemas
THE SHINING (1980) Dir; Stanley Kubrick
Nitehawk Cinema
INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978) Dir; Philip Kaufman
Today's Pick? Where to begin, I ask? Deneuve always beguiles. Apu must wait for next week's longer visit. McCrea might turn this or any weekend into a long one. If ya get my drift. And a pair of late 70's horror films, considered by many to be classics of both their time and genre, fail to excite. So I'm going with a real scary perf, delivered by none other than Mercedes McCambridge, who would later prove the only voice worthy of personifying the devil him/herself, in what remains for me the scariest flick ever made still: William Friedkin's THE EXORCIST. Should you care to witness that evil vocal in its physical manifestation, and going toe-to-toe with none other than Joan Crawford him/herself, look no further than Manhattan's fave haunted rep film house.
Nicholas Ray's JOHNNY GUITAR screens tonight at Anthology Film Archives as part of their excellent Blacklist examination "Written" by Philip Yordan.

P. S. We seem to be entering, finally, the warm cuddle of the sun's friendlier disposition, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
