June 23rd 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Continuing series this day include The Apu Trilogy at Film Forum, CinéSalon - Jean-Claude Carrière: Writing the Impossible at the French Institute, and Glorious Technicolor: From George Eastman House and Beyond at MoMA. The unhinged unspoolery be thus;

Film Forum

The Apu Trilogy

APARAJITO (1956) Dir; Satyajit Ray

APUR SANSAR (1959) Dir; Satyajit Ray

GOODFELLAS (1990) Dir; Martin Scorsese

French Institute/Alliance Française

CinéSalon - Jean-Claude Carrière: Writing the Impossible

VALMONT (1989) Dir; Milos Forman

MoMA

Glorious Technicolor: From George Eastman House and Beyond

YOLANDA AND THE THIEF (1945) Dir; Vincente Minnelli

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (1951) Dir; Vincente Minnelli

Today's Pick? Apu's been picked, Henry, Jimmy and Tommy are sticking around Film Forum for a coupl'a more days, and I'd really feel like the well needed a break were I to return to MoMA's Technicolor series for the 7th time in 23 days. For these reasons and a more important one, the fact that I rank this verison of Les Liaisons Dangereuses a peg or two higher than Stephen Frears' own excellent adap, I single this gem out today. Plus there's a free wine reception/chatfest immediately following the screening. The Frogs just know how to hop, y'know?

Milos Forman's VALMONT unspools in spectacular 35mm, showcasing master DP Miroslav Ondrícek's luminous cinematography, as part of the French Institute's wonderful ongoing CinéSalon series! Women know this film by an altogether different title; COLIN FIRTH BEGINS.

P. S. The warm cuddle of the sun's friendlier disposition seems finally to have arrived, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
