Today's Pick? Yes, the 4K DCP resto of the greatest film ever made kicks off a two-week run today, but that's all the more reason to be selective regarding the day I make it my Pick. Or the days. We'll see. Ray's Apu Trilogy was my Pick just some weeks ago, and I've dipped into MoMA's Technicolor well way too often this month. Eisenstein's STRIKE is a fairly common screening in our movie-mad burg, as is Faye Dunaway's onscreen meltdown/notorious biopic. So it's clear I've only one choice tonight, and I'm glad it's an opportunity to fete one of the only African-American auteurs of the 70's. His output during that decade includes the essential teen coming-of-age dramedy COOLEY HIGH, the urban musical CAR WASH, and the undersung biopic GREASED LIGHTNING. But he may perhaps be best remembered for his 80's martial arts mash-up, a gem fondly regarded by the teen audience that grew up in that decade, regardless of ethnicity. Plus, it's an outdoor screning in June. There can only be one.
Michael Schultz's THE LAST DRAGON screens tonight in downtown Manhattan's Columbus Park at sunset. Come feel the beat of the rythym of the yeah I'm not gonna finish it. Nope. Ain't gonna.

P. S. The warm cuddle of the sun's friendlier disposition seems finally to have arrived, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm.
