June 27th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Continuing series this day include the 10-week trib to master filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu at IFC Center, the slowly winding-down, for reals this time, Apu Trilogy at Film Forum, and the halfway mark-met Glorious Technicolor: From Eastman House and Beyond at MoMA. The kinetic granular gripery be thus;

IFC Center

Yasujiro Ozu

THE ONLY SON (1936) Dir; Yasujiro Ozu

JAWS (1975) Dir; Steven Spielberg

THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (1973) Dir; Alejandro Jodorowsky

Film Forum

The Apu Trilogy

PATHER PANCHALI (1955) Dir; Satyajit Ray

APARAJITO (1956) Dir; Satyajit Ray

THE THIRD MAN (1949) Dir; Carol Reed

MoMA

Glorious Technicolor: From Eastman House and Beyond

SCARAMOUCHE (1952) Dir; George Sidney

CHAD HANNA (1940) Dir; Henry King

APACHE DRUMS (1951) Dir; Hugo Fregonese

Anthology Film Archives

OCTOBER (1928) Dir; Sergei Eisenstein

OLD AND NEW (1929) Dir; Sergei Eisenstein

Landmark Sunshine Cinema

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) Dir; Stanley Kubrick

Today's Pick? First, the elimination round: recent choices such as Ray's Apu Trilogy at Film Forum and Glorious Technicolor at MoMA must be bypassed today, and longer term affairs such as IFC's Ozu trib and the new 4K DCP resto of the greatest movie ever made afford me time to select them. So what's crucial today, what's the essential screening? I'd love to select Kubrick's finest achievement, one of the greatest spectacles and most introspective wonders of the cinema, except that I've attended a screening of said masterpiece at IFC some years ago and it was amongst the worst prints ever offered for public consumption. Not to imply tonight's print will be less than impeccable, but Moving Image has booked the very same film for a 70mm series in August, so I'm including all these factors in my decision today. And going with a visionary director of equal worth if only slighter status. Which may change given the current renewed interest in his life and CV.

Alejandro Jodorowsky's THE HOLY MOUNTAIN screens at midnight tonight at the IFC Center. My ultimate validation of this film is a paraphrasing of the filmmaker's raison d'être: why not?

P. S. The warm cuddle of the sun's friendlier disposition seems finally to have arrived, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm.
