RAZORBACK (1984) Dir; Russell Mulcahy
Today's Pick? I'm really tempted to go for Mulcahy's RAZORBACK, not just because it's screening at my new fave venue in NYC, home of the finst root beer n' tater tots this burg has to offer, but also because it's a piece of my youth I haven't seen since, well, my youth. I feel like I've gone to the Technicolor well at MoMA quite a bit these last few weeks, and while there's no shame in that I do like to shine the Kliegs on a mutlitude of hijinks. Waters' first foray into so-called "respectable" fare tempts in a major way, but I feel drawn back towards the Manhattan moviegoer's fave haunted house, which has been programming repertory series of increasing interest these last coupl'a few years. Casa de Mekas still provides fare of the experimental and even bizarre stripe, but the recent dedication to themes like the Hollywood Blacklist and a devotion to authentic 35mm unspoolings have helped make this an even more essential destination spot for the classic film lover. That ghostly apparition sitting next to you is just Robert Smith of The Cure. Make sure he doesn't steal your popcorn. Just kidding, it's the ghost of Luis Buñuel and he has come to eat your soul. Which is extra credit at the Tisch School if I remember correctly.
Tom Schiller's NOTHING LASTS FOREVER and Gavin Lambert's ANOTHER SKY unspool tonight at Anthology Film Archives as part of their just-kicked off series One-Film Wonders. No extra charge to sit next to the guy who brings his own mattress.

P. S. The warm cuddle of the sun's friendlier disposition seems finally to have arrived, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm.
