July 28th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Ongoing series this day includes True Crime! at Film Forum, and the closing moments for both Mexico at Midnight: Noir from Mexican Cinema's Golden Age & Glorious Technicolor: From George Eastman House and Beyond at MoMA. The silver halide hooliganism be thus;

Film Forum

True Crime!

LUCKY LUCIANO (1973) Dir; Francesco Rosi

THE MATTEI AFFAIR (1972) Dir; Francesco Rosi

THE THIRD MAN (1949) Dir; Carol Reed

MoMA

Mexico at Midnight: Noir from Mexican Cinema's Golden Age

ANOTHER DAWN (1943) Dir; Julio Bracho

TWILIGHT (1945) Dir; Julio Bracho

Glorious Technicolor: From George Eastman House and Beyond

THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (1955) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock

LADY IN THE DARK (1944) Dir; Mitchell Leisen

Tony Dapolito Recreation Center

STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982) Dir; Nicholas Meyer

Today's Pick? Love the Crime series at the Forum, but not swayed today, even though the wonderfully batshit Gian-Maria Volonte takes center stage in both flicks. I'm very tempted to choose MoMA's excellent and essential Mexican Noir series, but I feel I must wait until its greatest star closes out the shadowy mayhem. Instead, I'm going with one of the modern cinema's most venomous and vile villains, if only so I might utilize that alliteration. In other words, or more precisely in Shatner's words, KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nicholas Meyer's STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN screens on the rooftop of the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center this glorious July dusk. Don't succumb to two-dimensional thinking, head over early and secure yer folding chair! And bring pizza! With some Romulan Ale!

P. S. The warm cuddle of the sun's friendlier disposition seems finally to have arrived, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability.
