Today's Pick? I'm going with a left field choice today: Gordon Douglas' TONY ROME, screening at the Library for the Performing Arts as part of their ongoing celbration of the centennial of Frank Sinatra's birth. While certainly nowhere near what I would describe as a good film, it is wildly entertaining, the result of a man so successful and so deep into the timeline of that success that he simply didn't give a good goddam anymore, and the film itself seems to be about the teasing of that late-career ennui. It's kooky and goofy, while perhaps never winking directly at the lens like pal Dean Martin in the Matt Helm flicks it does present an icon who's in on the joke, and shares it willingly with his fans. It's camp to be sure, but it's also representative of the Chairman's deep and abiding cool. Tix are free but the lines form early, so be sure to get there well in advance of the 6pm showtime. You really wanna be late for Frankie?

P. S. The warm cuddle of the sun's friendlier disposition seems finally to have arrived, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm.
