August 20th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Today's lone rep series is the magnificent if solitary Scorsese Screens at MoMA. The rest of the limited but luminous lenticular lunacy be thus;

MoMA

Scorsese Screens

LE PLAISIR (!952) Dir; Max Ophuls

LEON MORIN, PRIEST (1961) Dir; Jean-Pierre Melville

McCarren Park

PRETTY IN PINK (1987) Dir; John Hughes

Hunter's Point Park

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989) Dir; Rob Reiner

Today's Pick? As much as I like to go Old School with these here choosin's, I'm drawn to the last remaining outdoor screenings of the season. Not only that, but there's a screening today that, while perhaps not on the same artistic level as th works from French masters Ophuls and Melville, is not only set in Manhattan but features it as an honest-to-goodness character in the film. Yes, I mostly despise romcoms, yes I mostly despise Billy Crystal, and yes, I almost totally despise Harry Connick, which trifecta should rationally add up to me balling this one-sheet up and pitching it in the watesbasket. And yet, I'm always an honest broker of this rep circiut, and of my feeleings toward individual films, even one I'd LOVE to hate. So I'm not only admitting I love this iconic screen romance, I'm making it my Pick. And I'm asking for extra pepper on my paprikash. Stop me, just try.

Rob Reiner's buoyant and ebullient love letter to modern urban romance, the borough of Manhattan, and excellent Woody Allen rip-offs, 1989's WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, screens tonight at Hunter's Point Park in Queens. To even the most hard-hearted amongst my Stockah clan, who have resisted this film lo these 26 years, I defy you to attend this unspooling and not find yourself singing Surrey With the Fringe On Top. But, yes, it will be in front of Ira. Watch the movie and find out.

P. S. The warmer, fiercer cuddle of the sun's sunnier disposition has reached its zenith, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
