September 18th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

New and continuing series today include the director hosannahs to Yasujiro Ozu at IFC Center, Vittorio De Sica at Film Forum, and Hasse Ekman at MoMA, to actress/movie star/definition of the word luminous Ingrid Bergman, as well as the novel odes like Modern Matinees at MoMA, See It Big: New York on Film! at Museum of the Moving Image, and the swanktastic Cabaret Cinema at the Rubin Museum. Let's separate the cazsh geek from the Cinegeek, shall we?

Cazsh is short for casual by the way. I worked really hard on that. Oh the hell with it;

Today's Pick? The docket is absolutely flooded with films prosecuting thier own, and very worthy causes; Ozu's MORNING and Miller's WARRIOR at IFC, LeRoy's CAESAR and Ekman's HYACINTHS at MoMA, De Sica's MIRACLE and THIEVES at Film Forum, and of course the craft cocktails and positively hedonistic legroom at the euphoric Rubin Museum. However, if we're talking venue today, one most romantic indeed throws the light switch tonight after its always temporary summer dormancy. It might've been enough to stave off such offerings as Hitchcock's NOTORIOUS at BAM and MacKendrick's SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS at Moving Image, both screening in 35mm might I add, but the fact that one of the greatest action films ever made has been booked by the cinematic temple in Jersey City, that simply trumps the field. It's rep as one of the greatest men-on-a-mission WW2 films is justly deserved, and it comes by its testosterone honestly, boasting Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn among the main cast members. And a few Brits as well. I mean, they helped, y'know?

J. Lee Thompson's THE GUNS OF NAVARONE unspools tonight at the Landmark Jersey Loews as inauguration to their 2015/16 film season. The PATH train leaves you literally across the street from the jernt. The popcorn and candy is a buck apiece. And admission is $8. Hey, procrastinators and Jerseyphobes; get off yer ass and catch this classic in the venue intended, an honest-to-goodness movie palace! And let's be honest; it just never gets old rooting against the Nazis. That's what I call entertainment!

P. S. The warmer, fiercer cuddle of the sun's sunnier disposition has begun its annual wane, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability.
