Today's Pick? Only yesterday made the De Sica trib my cherce, and the very same separate admission trip bill to boot. I gotta admit Minnelli's TIME is kind of a waste, no matter how much I love Bergie. That leaves two venues, and I'm not nuts about the bill repping the 35mm series this day, although I really like both films. But if ya realy wanna celebrate the glory of 35mm film, there is only one clear choice, one of the bext examples of what Hollywood came to refer to, then and for generations going forward, as The Touch. And I don't mean no no forget it I'm not making a Bill Cosby joke here. Too soon?
Ernst Lubitsch's TROUBLE IN PARADISE unspools in its magnificent monochrome glory at MoMA as part of their wonderful new series Modern Matinees: Earliest Days! Alright, I'm sorry about the Cosby joke! Can we get past that already and discuss the wonderful chemistry between Herbert Marshall, Kay Francis and my fave Miriam Hopkins? The witty and sparkling banter scripted by Samson Raphaelson and Grover Jones? Or the perfect setting of atmosphere by DP Victor Milner, he of De Mille's CLEOPATRA, Sturges' THE LADY EVE, and Anthony Mann's THE FURIES? Fine, right, be that way. Jeez, ya tell one Cosby joke...
