October 13th 2015. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Well, it would appear that an anomaly has occured; there are, as of this writing, no series unspooling today in our movie-mad metropolis. However, before you panic and book a flight to the New Beverly in L.A., you should take note of the fantastic individual screenings on display today, including what might be the mamma of all Italian melodramas, one of the earliest cinematic sojourns down the rabbit hole, and what has perhaps become known as the quintessential slasher film from that genre's late 70's/ early 80's peak. So, ya know, two out of three. The moviola mishegas be thus;

Film Forum

ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS (1960) Dir; Luchino Visconti

Library for the Performing Arts

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (1915) W.W. Young

Nitehawk Cinema

FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) Dir; Sean Cunningham

Today's Pick? Recently chose Visconti's masterwork of overwrought emotion, and hell, or at least Florida, will have to completely freeze over aforn I choose the fella in tha hockey mask. And anyway the clear choice is the earliest made film, W. W. Young's ALICE IN WONDERLAND, screening at Lincoln Center's Library for the Performing Arts as part of their celluloid celebration of the150th anniversary of the publication of Lewis Carroll's ubiquitous fable. Live piano accompaniment will be provided by Makia Mutsumura. Attendance is free but seats fill incredibly fast, so claim yer real estate early lest ye become one more fire hazard. And should anyone offer you any free cake or drink, be sure to request the side-effects reel.

P. S. The warmer, fiercer cuddle of the sun's sunnier disposition has begun its annual wane, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability.
