Today's Pick? Woody allen's lone foray into the type of full-on slapstick comedy from the past that inspired him sotakes place, ironically, in the future. Exactly the type of future you'd expect from the Woodman's imagination, as well. Steak and cigars have become health foods, robot tailors still can't get the size correct, and sex has become a wholly impersonal appliance-assisted affair. What hasn't changed? The word is still a political mess, with a hardscrabble group of guerilla rebels ploting to overthrow a fascist dictator. Or his nose, to be more precise. You'll just have to see the movie for an explanation, okay? What also hasn't changed, in this ral future-world lo these 42 years later, is Allen's personal and political outlook, as well as his ability, admittedly nowa tad inconsistent, to get us to laugh at all life's harsh realities. Which makes him not merely one of our most gifted cinematic artists, but a real mensch. And so much more than just a nose.
Woody Allen's SLEEPER unspools in glorious 35mm tonight at the Nitehawk Cinema. The ensemble known as Dead Heavens and Delicate Steve will provide a live score to accompany the film, so the experience is truly a one-off, never to be experienced again. Make sure you hide that orb deep at the bottom of your purse/backpack, they're pretty strict about customers sneaking that kind of swag in.
