MoMA
Modern Matinees: In the Beginning
BROKEN BLOSSOMS (1919) Dir; D. W. Griffith*

INSIANG (1976) Dir; Lino Brocka
Film Society of Lincoln Center
THE MANXMAN (1929) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock
SABOTEUR (1942) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock
FRENZY (1972) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock
IFC Center
STAR 80 (1983) Dir; Bob Fosse
Nitehawk Cinema
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) Dir; George A. Romero*
*Live musical accompaniment by Morricone Youth
Today's Pick? Romero's seminal zombie begetter is, alas, sold out, and the combo of film and live score really made this a winner. Satyajit Ray's winning, winsome, sincerley crafted ode to youth coming of age in an India on the verge of modernization can go F*@# itself already! Ya know how friggin' annoying it is to keep track of how the various venues who've presented the trilogy have scheduled it?!?!?! Okay, I'm mostly kidding, but yo. Enuff. Go buy the BluRay. Brocka's INSIANG is a breakout work of Phillipino New Wave cinema from the 70's, and Griffith's tale of racial injustice is always an essential watch. However they just don't meet the Ghoultide season's requirements. So, as is usually the case, I turn to Big Al.
Three by the Mahstah unspool today at the Film Society of Lincoln Center's Francesca Beale Theater; 1929's THE MANXMAN, his penultimate silent; 1942's SABOTEUR, his successful Americanization of THE 39 STEPS; and 1972's FRENZY, his final British film. All three can be had for a specially discounted tik, so my advice to you is to run betwen the raindrops, snag that stub, and nestle into a seat you deign yer fave for the duration of the dread and suspense. Plus, the popcorn's top notch. Just don't dig to the bottom of the bag what is that mushy thing I feel it sure isn't popcorn lemme brush some of these popped kernels aside and GAAAHHH IT'S AN EYEBALL!!! Nah, just kiddin', they don't include eyeballs with the popcorn at Lincoln Center. Where do you think they are, Staten Island?
