Film Society of Lincoln Center

Action and Anarchy: The Films of Seijun Suzuki

EIGHT HOURS OF FEAR (1957) Dir; Seijun Suzuki

PASSPORT TO DARKNESS (1959) Dir; Seijun Suzuki

Today's Pick? I've recently made Niblo's ZORRO my film du jour, and Kubrick and Douglas' rebel hero took the top spot yesterday. So it's down to two fantastic series, and much as I love what MoMA gets up to for their annual film prezfest, I gotya go with what promises to be the kookier, more fascinating double bill.

1957's EIGHT HOURS OF FEAR and 1959's PASSPORT TO DARKNESS unspool in glorious 35mm monochrome as part of the Film Society's trib to their maker, Action and Anarchy: The Films of Seijun Suzuki. I've only been exposed to his unique cinematic vision through two of his most famous works, BRANDED TO KILL and the Tarantino-begetting TOKYO DRIFTER, so the opportunity to witness further work from this boundary-testing maverick bests all else what tempts this day. Observe the code of bushido should you attend these screenigns today; open all crinkly cello packaging before the movie starts. Look, I didn't write the code of Bushido, it's just in there. Look around a bit, you'll find it.

P. S. The warmer, fiercer cuddle of the sun's sunnier disposition has begun its annual wane, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm.
