January 21st 2016. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

New and continuing series this completely bone-chilling day include the closure of Film Forum's wonderful celebration of the Bard on film, Stratford-On-Houston, and two programs at MoMA; the onging Modern Matinees: A Pioneer Cowboy and the newly beginning All That Jack (Cole). The halide hipsterism be thus;

Film Forum

Stratford-On-Houston

MACBETH (1971) Dir; Roman Polanski

MoMA

Modern Matinees: A Pioneer Cowboy

KENO BATES, LIAR (1915) Dir; William S. Hart

BRANDING BROADWAY (1918) Dir; William S. Hart

All That Jack (Cole)

DOWN TO EARTH (1947) Dir; Alexander Hall

TONIGHT AND EVERY NIGHT (1945) Dir; Victor Saville

Syndicated

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978) Dir; Philip Kaufman

Today's Pick? I really wanna choose Phil Kaufman's once-maligned and since-reappraised remake of what I consider the gruff & gritty Don Siegel's masterpiece, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, yet as buoyant the news of a new rep screen is to my classic film-lovin' soul, I feel the need always to explore the venue personally before I decide to include it with the likes of Moving Image or MoMA or the Walter Reade. So I must throw my considerable weight, as my New Year's resolution of a diet has yet to kick in, behind the closing day of Film Forum's excellent trib to the most celebrated writer in our collective history, one William Shakespeare, with the series Stratford-On-Houston.

Roman Polanski's MACBETH, regarded still as the most bloody and violent of the film iterations of The Scottish Play, unspools today 4 times in a brand new 4K resto that is sure to visually pronounce its graphic content. Sadly there exists no tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow beyond this. this series' tomorrow has arrived today. Don't miss it.

P. S. Winter's icy grip seems to have finally taken hold of our fair city, and believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm.
