February 18th 2016. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Today's pickin's be slim, yet mighty. New and continuing series this day include Modern Matinees: A Pioneer Cowboy at MoMA, and the supremely seductive Witches' Brew at BAM. The filmic fantabulous be thus;

Film Forum

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1946) Dir; Jean Cocteau

MoMA

Modern Matinees: A Pioneer Cowboy

THE TIGER MAN (1918) Dir; William S. Hart

BAM Cinématek

Witches' Brew

HAXAN (1922) Dir; Benjamin Christensen

HAXAN: WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES (1968) Dir; Benjamin Christensen

Today's Pick? I cannot let a spectacular restoration of one of the most, perhaps the most romantic work of cinema, pass without asking it to be my Valentine on the week said saint is observed. I'm a sucker for true love, what can I say?

Jean Cocteau's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST , what remains the definitive cinematic take on the pop fairy tale, unspools in a magnificent, newly-struck 35mm print at Film Forum, for its last day barring a reprieve. Should you find yourself occasioned of the opportunity, do not miss this. It's not often that we're granted so powerful a visual, visceral example of the worst of our heart's yearnings transformed to its best. Avail yerselves, heartstruck knuckleheads of all ages. It never gets old.

P. S. Winter's icy grip has finally taken hold of our fair city, and believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
