Today's Pick? I really wanna go with one of today's wonderful series, but alas none offer the proposition of discounted package tix. The remaining prospects, therefore, would be a BluRay screener of the final Rat Pack flick at the Mid-Manhattan Library, plus midnight screenings of two boundary-testing genre classics from the age before CGI. So, as is so often the case, the answer is Fellini.
Federico Fellini's CITY OF WOMEN, the maestro's fantasia/nightmare envisioning a world populated and ruled entirely (perhaps) by the fairer, smarter sex, screens for a week at Film Forum in a brand-spankin' new DCP resto! General consensus has been that the director's considerable powers waned as the 70's grew into the 80's, but in truth anything he filmed is worth catching on the big screen. The filmmaker's alter ego, Marcello Mastroianni, once again steps into his boss' shoes, and as usual both enjoys the benefits of his indulgences and suffers the consequences for said. Grab your white scarf and fedora and steer your Vespa over to West Hosuton street. Ciao!
