March 25th 2016. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

America is all about choice. And today, finally, after three days of no other option but Film Forum, of which there is not a damn thing wrong with, we do finally have some other venues to choose from. New and ongoing series this day include Modern Matinees: An Animation Omnibus at MoMA, the leg-room resplendent Cabaret Cinema at the Rubin Museum, and the rabidly infectious Bark at the Moon at the Nitehawk Cinema. The lenticular lycanthropy be thus;

Film Forum

BLUE VELVET (1986) Dir; David Lynch

MoMA

Modern Matinees: An Animation Omnibus

MR. BUG GOES TO TOWN (1942) Dir; Dave Fleischer

Anthology Film Archives

WHO'S CRAZY? (1966) Dir; Thomas White

Rubin Museum

Cabaret Cinema

HIROSHIMA, MON AMOUR (1959) Dir; Alain Resnais

IFC Center

THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (1973) Dir; Alejandro Jodorowsky

Nitehawk Cinema

Bark at the Moon

THE HOWLING (1981) Dir; Joe Dante

Today's Pick? I'm gonna keep it simple. Any opportunity you have to catch the ace makeup work of Rob Bottin, one of the greatest artists to ever work in his chosen field, who brought his wide-eyed wonder and can-do spirit to such game-changing projects as this and, of course, John Carpenter's THE THING, that counts as an unmissable screening. So L train doubt be damned, I'm choosing the screening of Joe Dante's THE HOWLING at the Nitehawk Cinema, unfolding as part of their Bark at the Moon series. Personally I feel like I was bitten by a rabid spud during a full moon, seeing as I practice something akin to TaterTothrophy whence I visit the 'Hawk. Followed by several doses of their tap Root Beer. But seeing as there seems to be no laws on the books frowning on such appetites, I'll just continue til the Nitehawk tells me it's time to go. Wouldn't be the first time.

P. S. Winter's icy grip seems to have loosened on our fair metropolis, but milder weather aside some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
