April 26th 2016. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Today's lone ongoing series is the Film Society's brilliant, comprehesive and fascinating Queer Cinema Before Stonewall. The silver halide salience be thus;

Film Forum

A TOUCH OF ZEN (1971) Dir; King Hu

Film Society of Lincoln Center

Queer Cinema Before Stonewall

MADCHEN IN UNIFORM (1931) Dir; Leontine Sagan

MICHAEL (1924) Dir; Carl Theodore Dreyer

A FLORIDA ENCHANTMENT (1914) Dir; Sidney Drew

Syndicated

ROPE (1948) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock

ALIEN (1979) Dir; Ridley Scott

Today's Pick? I'm going with the Film Society's meticulous focus on the manner in which the LGBT comminuty was repped in the mainstream cinema before society wised its ass up and embraced tolerance, if not total then widespread. Queer Cinema Before Stonewall today offers up a daring late-Weimar entry, Sagan's MADCHEN IN UNIFORM, Dreyer's MICHAEL, a entry from his silent era, and the waaaaaay early A FLORIDA ENCHANTMENT, a film from 1914 that may not have broken ground narratively but still shocks as a narrative visually. Take advantage of the FSLC's 3-film discount bonanza and save some cash that you may otherwise blow on thier excellent popcorn and Coca-Cola! Embrace your inner homosexual and explore the films in this series. Unless you're an outer homosexual. Then exploring is so yesterday.

P. S. Winter's icy grip seems to have loosened on our fair metropolis, but milder weather aside some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
