June 23rd 2016. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Only one lone series on hand for our collective perusal this day, Modern Matinees: Fifteen by Otto Preminger at MoMA, but every individual screening is a special one as well. Let's get to it, shall we?

Film Forum

HEAVEN CAN WAIT (1943) Dir; Ernst Lubitsch

THE PASSIONATE THIEF (1960) Dir; Mario Monicelli

I KNEW HER WELL (1965) Dir; Antonio Pietrangeli

MoMA

Modern Matinees: Fifteen by Otto Preminger

SAINT JOAN (1957) Dir; Otto Preminger

BowTie Chelsea Cinemas

WHAT'S UP DOC? (1973) Dir; Peter Bogdanovich

Putnam Triangle Plaza

FRIDAY FOSTER (1975) Dir; Arthur Marks

Today's Pick? Made the Lubitsch my pick as recently as two days ago, and the two entries from Italy's New Wave tempt but don't convince. I've always thought Petey Bogz's trib to Hawks sorta a watered-down affair, and while Preminger's take on okay look, this is just belaboring the obvious. Pam Grier screens on an outdoor big screen tonight courtesy of BAMCinématek. That means there is no competition.

Arthur Marks' FRIDAY FOSTER, what would prove to be the Blaxploitation icon's last starring role until Tarantino revived her career with JACKIE BROWN, screens tonight at 8pm at Putnam Triangle Plaza, Fulton street and Grand avenue, in Clinton, Brooklyn. If you think you can handle this much woman, tonight's yer chance to spend some time under the summer stars with Pam. Lucky us.

P. S. Summer seems to have finally graced our fair metropolis, but milder weather aside some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
