My most dreaded and hated foe, the scourge of our lands known as Winter, has sent ahead as forward charge perhaps the worst offender amongst his wraith's gallery, that helmeted beast known only by initials that fester in the belly of Hell during those months we deem most pleasant, only to rise from the depths once every solar cycle to plague our mirth. I can only be speaking of the NFL. This sentiment comes as shock to none who know me. To those it does, make sure you get your slips in with me before game time this Sunday.

I won't have you lookin' so glum, chum! Sure, I'm feeling the comedown from the Labor Day jubilation just as much as the next guy, but just 'cause Autumn and hurricane season approacheth doesn't mean there's no joy to be had in Mudville! To wit, ongoing classic film series today consist of MoMA's Auteurist History of Film Reprise, which gives movie lovers a second chance to catch up with the museum's excellent programming, and Film Forum's sadly ending Son of Summer SciFi, Fantasy and Horror, which has been pure Cinegeek crack. Here's the full rundown;

Look, September, I wanna clear something up. I got nothing against you, nothing against what you bring to the city. In fact, you're pretty awesome! You mellow out the weather, you oversee the final weeks of a contentious baseball season, you spur me on to make as many trips to the park to read, write and scope out the chicks before they start layering. You're the goods, and you hover over my hometown like a benevolent angel. No, I've got nothing against you at all.

As summer '13 approaches I know I'm not alone in my enthusiastic expectations over RDJ's 4th outing as IRON MAN, J. J. Abrams' follow up to his excellent '09 STAR TREK reboot, and Guillermo Del Toro's HOLY GOOD GODDAM BEJEEZUS HOW IS IT ALREADY AUGUST 31ST?????

As another August comes to a close, amid the stirrings of pre-season NFL, Back-To-School sales and Halloween displays emerging at the local Duane Reade in a timely fashion, I find myself still waiting for an entity conspicuous only for its glaring abscence; August 2013. Maybe we'll get 2 Augusts in 2014? Maybe I should stop complaining and just get to the day in classic film?

Just when the waning days of August provide weather ideal for outdoor screenings replete with the smell of newly mown grass and the din of hipster twattery, there are none. Way to go, Summer '13. Nah, don't bother showing up now. In the words of a bitter, guilting parent whose birthday visit you forgot about, maybe you'll make it to NYC next year. There are, however, plenty of reasons other than air-conditioning to visit the rep house nearest you today.

My birthday week continues merrily apace! In terms of celebratory cinematic doings last night's screening of Powell and Pressburger's THE RED SHOES at the Nitehawk Cinema will prove hard to top indeed. Yet I'm glad there will be several attempts to do so by the various rep houses about our fair metropolis! Ongoing series on today's classic screening calendar include MoMA's Auteurist History of Film, Anthology Film Archives' That's Sexploitation!, and Film Forum's monumental Son of Summer Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror. The complete rundown as follows:

I celebrate every August 27th one more year wherein my cinematic obsession found its indulgence, and look forward with great anticipation to tonight's screening of my Pick, one of my all-time faves in what promises to be a stunning 35mm print. Before we get to that, today's notable series include the Nitehawk Cinema's VICE Presents the Film Foundation, the imminent exhaustion of That's Sexploitation! at Anthology Film Archives, and the still thriving Son of Summer Sci-fi, Fantasy and Horror over at Film Forum. The lineup as follows;
