May 2014! New Month! New Calendar! New Podcast! Old Socks! I'm Workin' On It!

The May '14 calendar of NYC's repertory film shenanigans is live (click that thang on yer right to dig in!), the new podcast providing a comprehensive overview of the month is posted, and my Facebook and Twitter acounts have been updated accordingly. I've never been this organized in my entire life. Now if I can only remember where I put the cat.

April 30th 2014. Pick of the Day.

Now seems as good a day as any to discuss our fave works of Cinema Deluge. Aronofsky's NOAH? Peter Weir's THE LAST WAVE? Mikael Salomon's HARD RAIN? How about the tsunami subgenre? Cameron's THE ABYSS? Juan Antonio Bayona's THE IMPOSSIBLE? Any number of films directed by Roland Emmerich? Musicals? Kelly and Donen's SINGING IN THE RAIN, Jacques Demy's THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG? Am I bitter about the weather? What a strange question, why do you ask?

New and continuing series today include An Auteurist History of Film and Marco Bellocchio: A Retrospective at MoMA, and the weeklong trib to Ellen Burstyn at BAM Cinématek. The racing between the raindrops looks thus;

April 29th 2014. Pick of the Day.

As the month draws to a close activity on the rep film circuit grows increasingly potential rather than kinetic, and the May sked promises some BIG series and special screenings to be sure, but while today's listings might seem scant the pickin's be bountiful indeed. The lone ongoing series today is the Nitehawk Cinema's sadly, imminently mothballed Vice Presents the Film Foundation Screening Series, which has just about hit the year-old mark (I've counted the notches next to the fridge), and goes out with a spectacular bang indeed. Firstly, let's examine the repertory unspoolings in toto;

April 27th 2014. Pick of the Day.

Assembling the May interactive rep calendar, prepping my copy for the second podcast, trying to concurrently attend as many classic screenings as possible. Have I mentioned how much I love this task? And that there's not the merest invocation of irony in that statement? The circuit's about to blow up again, all the programming dreamt up in the sleepy months of January and February ready to bloom come spring and summer, along wth the myriad of outdoor screenings to coincide. So let's focus on April's closing weekend and the early bloom on the vine.

Today's ongoing series include American Hustlers at IFC Center, Anthony Mann: Mean Streets and Open Spaces at Museum of the Moving Image, Back with a Vengeance at BAM Cinematek, and Marco Bellocchio: A Retrospective at MoMA. The unspoolery as follows;

April 26th 2014. Pick of the Day.

You gonna let a little rain scare you off the city's rep film circuit today? You afraid of a little precipitation? If you can't deal with the abuse a few drops of water cause you how are you gonna take the crowds lining up at BAM or Film Forum? Hit the bricks, pal, 'cause you're wanting!!!

Whoah, sorry, I just re-watched GLENGARRY GLENN ROSS to celebrate Al Pacino's birthday. About twelve times. Must've subconsiosly rubbed off. Put the coffee down.

Today's continuing series include American Hustlers at IFC Center, The Hitchcock 9 at Film Forum, Marco Bellocchio: A Retrospective at MoMA, Anthony Mann: Mean Streets and Open Spaces at the Museum of the Moving Image, and Back with a Vengeance at BAM Cinematek. The cinematic roshambo as follows;

April 25th 2014. Pick of the Day.

I am glad to see this week of see-sawing emotions end, one that found me empathizing with my Boston brethren on the anniversary of their marathon tragedy, then just as quickly demanding their heads once the Yanks visited Fenway. There is probably something very comforting and triumphant to be found about our American commonality in particular and the human spirit in general germane of both of those scenarios, but really I just wanna jump like a monkey and tell Sawks fans to chew items unmentionable in the more elevated discourse I provide.

Okay it's gumballs. Gumballs is what I advise Big Papi fans to masticate upon. You came here for class? Really?

Ahem. Now to football.

New and continuing series today include American Hustlers at IFC Center, An Auteurist History of Film at MoMA, Back with a Vengeance at BAM, and the wonderfully swank Cabaret Cinema at the Rubin Museum. Here, now, are the days of our lives;

April 24th 2014. Pick of the Day.

Personally, I think it'd be a better world if the horses drove the carriages and the men drew them. Maybe not for the tourists. Or the traiffic. Or the streetsweepers. But by God I have an opinion on this controversy and I'll settle on it one day!

Ahem.

Today's continuing series include An Auteurist History of Film and Marco Bellocchio: A Retrospective at MoMA, and Back with a Vengeance at BAM Cinematek. Hilarity ensues;

April 23rd 2014. Pick of the Day.

How is it April 23rd already? How can the Yankees presently have put 20 games in the books by now (a 12-8 record, I thank ye)? Is it possible three days have passed since both Easter and the international celebration of all things THC graced our dispositions? In other words M'gawd, this month has flown, which must mean (gasp) I've actually been enjoying myself. This bodes ill for the speed of the coming months, which will only surely get more interesting in terms of both activity on the rep film circuit and weather beneficial to its attendance. I'll just have to learn how to slow time down best I can, in the meantime let's look at a few of the causes for this month's sudden velocity.

New and continuing series today include An Auteurist History of Film and Marco Bellocchio: A Retrospective at MoMA, and Back with a Vengeance at BAM Cinematek. The hijinks are thus;

April 22nd 2014. Pick of the Day.

No series today, new, continuing, ongoing or otherwise. No scheduled anything today, it seems. Well, at least no counter-programming. There is one very special screening happening today, a rather gargantuan effort, featuring one of the most endurng icons of the silver screen. And its listing appears, further explanation be damned, as thus;
