Okay, here we go. The rep circuit calendar, as well as the rest of our fair metropolis, begins its warm-up proper as the month of March begins to build some steam. All the romantic notions that bounced about the noggins of our beloved programmers are soon to be manifest, and this 31-day stretch offers the first concrete evidence of such. Some venues are relatively quiet for the moment, others are clearing their throats. Some are bellowing quite nicely I thank ye very much. So let's dig into this day's offerings, a welcome mat for the entire weekend, and rub our palms not, for a change, out of their bone-chilled woe, but in anticipation for the months and months of repertory ebullience to come.
New and continuing series this day include the concurrent tribs to glamour-puss Ginger Rogers and bratwurst-puss Wim Wenders at MoMA, Black & White 'Scope: American Cinema at BAM Cinématek, Screenwriters and the Blacklist: Before, During and After - Part Three: Post-Blacklist at Anthology Film Archives, See It Big! High and Wide at Astoria's Moving Image, Justice in Film at the New York Historical Society, and the eternally swank Cabaret Cinema at the Rubin Museum. The movie screen madcappery be thus;

There's this new indie horror flick, and it's getting great reviews, and it's entitled IT FOLLOWS, and I swore it was about February 2015, no particluar single incident, just the month that will not go away. Actually its subject matter is altogether different, turns out it's just my outlook this morning of March the 5th. To paraphrase Colonel Kilgore, someday this winter's gonna end.
New and continuing series on today's rep circuit include the Ginger Rogers and Wim Wenders frottagery at MoMA, Black & White 'Scope: American Cinema at BAM Cinématek, Sinatra: An American Icon at the Library of the Performing Arts, and another installment in the Nitehawk's One Nite Only program. The celluloid Cuckookery be thus;

Y'know, as horrible a test of sinew and spirit this now thankfully deceased February '15 was, there were some memorable moments. The MANHUNTER screening at IFC, attended by none other than the serially-killing Tom Noonan. Speaking of Michael Mann, my taking in of his latest, the criminaly underappreciated BLACKHAT, which is no waste of your two hours to be sure. Discovering the brilliance of Damien Clazelle's WHIPLASH at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema, just in time to cheer for it at the Oscars and to beat the drum, pun intended, for its maker, who I suspect has announced himself as a major new cinematic voice. On the small screen both BETTER CALL SAUL and Marvel's AGENT CARTER showed once more how formidable a medium television has proven during this new golden age. And the Oscars, of course, with all its resplendent glitz, gloss, glam, and okay before I take as long as NPH did that night let's just get to this day's goods.
New and ongoing series this day include CinéSalon: Benoît Jacquot - Leading Ladies at the Alliance Française, or French Institute, Black & White 'Scope: American Cinema at BAM Cinématek, and the Wim Wenders fete at MoMA. The projector bulb's bedevilry be thus;

Hallo, Stockahz! It's been quite some time since I gave the monthly overview address in a form typed rather than spoken, but as you may have read I'm placing the podcast on a temporary moratorium until I figure out a new, potentially more popular format. Meantime, we'll just go back to what worked before. It's a plan that's worked previously for many a crooked politician and cat burglar, what better footsteps to follow in?
So welcome to the repertory film scene as gifted us by March 2015! There's a lot going on, and it's all good, so let's get to it!

We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet it should be noted, in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can say only this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most...human.
- Captain James Tiberius Kirk
Thank you Leonard Nimoy. And in the best possible display of abject defiance of the laws of the natural world, we will summarily refuse to allow your departure. Your katra remains in our hands.
Today's lone continuing series programmed amidst a busy sked are the Gordon Willis toast at Astoria's Moving Image, and the terrific Black & White 'Scope: American Cinema at BAM Cinématek. Let the Ju-Ju Bee jollility commence!

I feel like I'm dragging myself across February's finishing line. I could care less about breaking that tape. Just so long as March is on the other side. I never thought I'd pine for March, but it would seem T. S. Eliot was wrong about April, if ya catch my drift.
New and continuing series this day include the big screen valentines to Ginger Rogers and Gordon Willis, unspooling at MoMA and MoMI, repesctively, Black & White 'Scope: American Cinema at BAM Cinématek, and the eternally swank Cabaret Cinema at the Rubin Museum. Cinegeeks, shall we?

Show me any crisis in the world right now, show me violent skirmishes engaged in by peoples of differing beliefs, show me natural disasters caused by climate change, show me even the threat of asteroids and comets potentially colliding with our planet, and then show me, I dare you, something worse than the sight of A-Rod arriving at spring training. Go on, I'll wait.
Ongoing and concluding series this day include the last attempt to get their arms around Charles Laughton at the Film Forum, the completely just valentine sent to Ginger Rogers at MoMA, and the plucky Chelsea Classics series at the BowTie Chelsea Cinema. The wimwammery be thus;

I'm just admitting this outright; I'm still exhausted from Sunday's Oscar activities. So brevity is my goal with today's header. Much as I'd like to discuss the degree of jackass A-Rod, Kayne, or Travolta provide to the cultural conversation, nope. No, ain't gonna go down that road. I won't.
Ongoing series this day include the Charles Laughton 2-for-1 diet plan at Film Forum, and the Ginger Rogers glam lesson at MoMA. The projector bulb's ebullience be thus;
